## My Thoughts on A Non-combat Magic Artifact Researcher ー Actually Was an Extroadinary S-rank Mage~ Though He Worked Overtime Without Compensation and Contributed Greatly, He Was Labeled as Incompetent and Was Fired
Okay, that title is a mouthful, isn't it? But honestly, it's pretty accurate in setting expectations for this novel. It's got all the hallmarks of a wish-fulfillment story, where an unfairly treated protagonist gets his due. I dove in hoping for a relaxing read, and I mostly got what I expected, but with a few reservations.
### First Impressions
My initial reaction was cautiously optimistic. The setup – a ridiculously powerful mage being fired for being "incompetent" – felt a little cliché, but I was willing to see where it went. The early chapters focus on the aftermath of his firing and how he navigates his newfound freedom. I appreciated that the story didn't linger too long on the injustice of his situation, instead moving quickly to his new life.
### What Works Well
The power fantasy aspect is definitely a draw. The MC is undeniably strong, and it's satisfying to see him effortlessly overcome challenges. I also found the world-building engaging. The magic system is interesting, and the hints of a larger plot involving a potential demon lord or evil empire kept me curious.
### Areas of Concern
The pacing can be a bit slow at times. The "slice of life" elements are prevalent, which can be enjoyable, but there are moments where I felt the story was meandering. I also had some trouble connecting with the MC. He's portrayed as someone who is oblivious to his own strength and the feelings of others, which can be frustrating. While his character is explained and justified later in the story, it still felt like a barrier to fully investing in his journey.
### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, so a few things that might be considered spoilers. It's revealed that the MC is the fourth son of a powerful noble family, but he actively avoids using his family's influence. Also, his master has essentially been "brainwashing" him to keep his ego in check, which explains some of his behavior. Finally, the MC eventually meets a dragon and a girl, who seem likely to become love interests.
### Final Verdict
Overall, "A Non-combat Magic Artifact Researcher..." is a decent read if you're looking for a lighthearted fantasy with a strong protagonist. It's not groundbreaking, and the pacing can be uneven, but it offers a pleasant escape. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars. It's enjoyable enough to keep reading, but it's not a must-read by any means.
