Ankoku Kishi Monogatari ~Yuusha wo Taosu Tameni Maou ni Shoukansaremashita~ Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Ankoku Kishi Monogatari ~Yuusha wo Taosu Tameni Maou ni Shoukansaremashita~ This web novel, with its lengthy title, certainly evokes strong feelings. It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it type of story, and I can see why. The premise is intriguing: a protagonist summoned not as a hero, but as a Dark Knight by a Demon King to defeat a Hero party that includes his childhood friend. It's a setup ripe with potential for drama and unique character dynamics. ### First Impressions Diving in, I was initially drawn to the subversion of typical isekai tropes. The MC isn't some overpowered chosen one, but rather a subordinate to an "ugly" Demon King. This twist immediately sets it apart from countless other stories in the genre. However, some readers may find the initial chapters confusing, as the author throws you straight into the action. ### What Works Well Many readers praised the world-building, drawing comparisons to Greek and Norse mythology. The depiction of human relationships also seems to be a strong point. Some have said that the plot is good. I also appreciate that the story isn't afraid to explore perspectives beyond the MC's, offering insights into other characters, including the "antagonists." While the MC can be frustrating, some find his normalcy refreshing, especially his struggles with an inferiority complex. Some readers have mentioned that the story becomes particularly compelling after a certain point, with plotlines converging and character motivations becoming clearer. ### Areas of Concern The biggest point of contention seems to be the protagonist himself. Many find him frustratingly indecisive, passive, and lacking in self-respect. The childhood friend also gets some flak for her treatment of the MC and her unwavering loyalty to the Hero. Another recurring criticism is the abundance of misunderstandings that drive the plot forward. For many, this feels like a cheap and frustrating way to create conflict. Finally, the translation quality has been called into question, with some describing it as barely better than Google Translate. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Several reviews delve into significant plot points, including the MC's relationships, the Hero's character, and the fates of certain characters. If you're sensitive to spoilers, I'd recommend proceeding with caution. ### Final Verdict "Ankoku Kishi Monogatari" is a flawed but potentially rewarding read. If you can stomach a frustrating protagonist and some questionable plot contrivances, you might find yourself engrossed in its unique world and complex relationships. However, if you're looking for a straightforward power fantasy with a confident lead, this might not be the novel for you. Ultimately, your enjoyment will depend on your tolerance for the MC's shortcomings and your investment in the overall story.
