Guardian Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on *Guardian* *Guardian* is a wild ride of supernatural mystery, action, and romance – a blend that mostly works, but sometimes stumbles under the weight of its own ambition. Having now finished the novel, I can see why it has such a devoted fanbase and why the drama adaptation took off, but also understand some of the common criticisms. ### First Impressions I was immediately drawn into the world, with its blend of modern-day detective work and ancient Chinese mythology. The initial mysteries are intriguing, and the characters, especially the MC Zhao Yunlan, are immediately captivating. He's shameless, cunning, and a little feral – exactly the kind of protagonist I enjoy reading about. The setup is strong, promising a thrilling adventure with a supernatural twist. ### What Works Well The dynamic between Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei is the heart of the story. Their relationship, built on centuries of history and devotion, is undeniably compelling. I especially appreciated the author's effort in weaving in details about Chinese and Buddhist mythology, folklore, and popular beliefs. It adds a layer of depth and richness to the world-building that's rare in BL novels. Also, I found the supporting characters to be surprisingly well-developed and unique. Lin Jing and Da Qing, the black cat, were particular standouts, adding humor and depth to the narrative. ### Areas of Concern However, I have to admit that the plot becomes increasingly convoluted as the story progresses. The mythology, while fascinating, can also be overwhelming, leading to confusion about character motivations and overall goals. It can be a struggle to keep track of all the different factions, gods, and ancient artifacts. Several times I wanted to throw my hands up and just skim to the end. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Some readers might be disappointed by the initial romance between god!MC and the ML since it felt lackluster. Wang Zheng and Sangzan's tragic backstory moved me more than they do. The time-traveling in the drama version felt more meaningful. The MC might not even truly love the ML. Some also felt that the past relationship between the MC and ML felt anti-climatic. With the ML acting all repressed and denying his feeling it was expecting some thicc angst tragedy between them, but the past was super vanilla. ### Final Verdict Overall, *Guardian* is a worthwhile read for those who enjoy intricate plots, complex characters, and a healthy dose of the supernatural. While the convoluted plot can be frustrating, the strong character development, the engaging relationship between the leads, and the rich world-building make it a worthwhile experience. Just be prepared to wrack your brain a little along the way.
