Description

Office worker Yoshida has been crushing on his boss, Airi Gotou, for five years. Despite finally scoring a date with her, his confession is promptly rejected. Drunk and disappointed, he stumbles home, only to find a high school girl sitting on the side of the road. The girl, needing a place to stay the night, attempts to seduce Yoshida. Despite rejecting her advances, he nevertheless invites her into his apartment. The next morning, the girl, introducing herself as Sayu Ogiwara, reveals that she has run away from Hokkaido all the way to Tokyo. During her six-month spree, she continually traded s*xual favors for a roof over her head. Yoshida, however, remains unswayed by her seduction. Instead, he has her do a different kind of work — one that entails washing dishes and doing laundry. And so, a touching relationship between a heartbroken adult and a runaway high school girl begins.

Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou. Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou. This novel, with its eyebrow-raising title, initially gave me pause. "I Shaved. Then I Picked Up a High School Girl" sounds like the setup for something…questionable. However, diving in, I discovered a story that's surprisingly more than meets the eye, and definitely not what I initially expected. ### First Impressions The premise is undeniably strange, and I understand why some might be put off. I was definitely hesitant, wondering if this was just going to be another generic rom-com with uncomfortable undertones. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find a story that attempts to grapple with deeper issues than simple romance. ### What Works Well What immediately grabbed me was the surprisingly nuanced portrayal of the characters. The male lead isn't your typical wish-fulfillment protagonist. He's flawed, perhaps even a bit naive, but his genuine desire to help the female lead, Sayu, recover from her past traumas is admirable. Their interactions feel fairly realistic, and I appreciate that the story doesn't shy away from exploring the complexities of their cohabitation. I also found myself appreciating the bittersweet tone. It's not a fluffy, sugar-sweet romance; it delves into darker themes and explores the emotional turmoil of both characters. The author's writing style is engaging, painting vivid pictures without being overly verbose, and the dialogue feels natural. The story also touches on societal issues and failures, prompting reflection beyond the immediate narrative. ### Areas of Concern While I enjoyed the initial volumes, I can see how the introduction of potential harem elements and certain male personalities might detract from the core story for some readers. It seems there's a delicate balance between exploring the characters' relationships and veering into tropes that could undermine the overall narrative. ### Final Verdict "Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou." is a surprisingly compelling read. It's a character-driven story that explores themes of trauma, recovery, and the complexities of human relationships. While the premise and some later developments might not appeal to everyone, I found it to be a thought-provoking and ultimately rewarding experience. If you're looking for something beyond the typical light novel fare, and don't mind a bit of bittersweetness, I'd recommend giving this one a try. I am eagerly awaiting the next update.
