Description

I’ve encountered my ideal protagonist! It’s my friend, Hinomori Ryuuga. We’ve become the closest of friends after entering high school. My first impression of Ryuuga was “This is the kind of protagonist you’d see in something like an anime.” Then, that thought soon changed into conviction. First of all, this guy almost never talks about his past. Also, he frequently slips out of class. As soon as he comes back, he gets extremely tired, blood comes out from his lips, the sleeves and cuffs of his uniform get torn, and so forth. Furthermore, there’s always beauties that are surrounding Ryuuga. The one who’s like an idol within the school, Yukimiya Shiori. The cool expert of the sword, Aogasaki Rei. The mysterious transfer student, Elmira McCartney. It’s very tiring for me when these people appear in front of Ryuuga. I have to frantically make a fuss by saying things like “H, hey Ryuga! How did you get acquainted with Yukimiya!”, “W, why did the beautiful swordswoman Aogasaki come to the classroom to specifically meet Ryuga?!”, or “E, E, Elmira! What is it that you see in Ryuga!” …So why am I doing this? That’s because I, Kobayashi Ichirou, am a pro at being a friend. My life’s calling is to support Hinomori Ryuuga, the protagonist amongst protagonists, as a close friend character. ―Let the curtains open for the rom-com presented by co-starring best friend, Kobayashi Ichirou!

Is it Tough Being a Friend? Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Is it Tough Being a Friend? "Is it Tough Being a Friend?" hooked me with its unique premise: a protagonist dedicated to being the ultimate support character. The idea of someone actively trying to orchestrate events to fit a light novel narrative, highlighting the "main character," was incredibly appealing. The initial chapters were genuinely funny, filled with clever meta-commentary and a protagonist working tirelessly behind the scenes. However, my experience, like that of many others, became increasingly mixed as the story progressed. ### First Impressions The opening volume was a breath of fresh air. I found myself laughing out loud at the protagonist's (Ichiro's) dedication to his self-proclaimed role. The early interactions and the unveiling of Ryuuga's secret were well-executed and held a lot of promise. I was invested and eager to see how Ichiro would navigate the complexities of his chosen path. ### What Works Well The initial concept is undeniably strong. The humor, at least in the beginning, lands well, and the side characters are surprisingly engaging. Many readers have praised the first volume for its originality and the protagonist's genre-savviness. It's a fun, breezy read that's easy to get into, especially if you enjoy lighthearted stories with a touch of the supernatural. ### Areas of Concern Unfortunately, the novel seems to take a turn that disappointed many, including myself. The initial premise of a dedicated "side character" gradually fades, replaced by a more generic rom-com setup. I found the introduction of certain characters and plot elements detracted from the original charm. The protagonist's character also seems to decline, making questionable choices. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Several readers have expressed frustration with the introduction of a character called Taotie, citing "NTR undertones" and a shift in the protagonist's behavior that they found off-putting. The protagonist's willingness to let this character pursue a girl, even when it seems to cause him distress, was a major sticking point for some. ### Final Verdict "Is it Tough Being a Friend?" has a strong start and offers some genuinely funny moments. However, the shift in focus and the introduction of controversial elements ultimately detract from the initial promise. If you're looking for a lighthearted rom-com with a unique twist, the first volume might be worth a try. However, be prepared for a potential drop in quality as the story progresses. I'd recommend going in with tempered expectations and perhaps dropping it if it starts to lose its initial appeal. Overall, I'd give it a cautious recommendation, primarily for its early chapters and unique concept.
