In ancient times, a time where heroes are born. God, Man, Demon and all things on earth were mixed in between Heaven and Earth. There were three great god tribes: the Central Sheng Nong, the Southeast Gao Xing, the Northwest Xuan Yuan, they occupied three parts of the land, three independent empires. The heroes the world paid the most attention was undoubtedly the Sheng Nong Tribe’s War God Chi You and the Gao Xing Tribe’s Prince Shao Hao. Chi You was the Beast King brought under control by Shen Nong’s Yan Emperor many hundred years ago, cruel and honest, cunning and pure, his powers? He has never lost a battle. He has no rules in his heart, only revenge, his one goal is to use his powers to take over every single thing on earth, in one united empire. But fate makes fools of men, in his bid to cement his empire, he met the princess of the Xuan Yuan tribe, at first a misunderstanding, but very quickly they fell deeply in love. Under the Peach Blossom Tree, Chi You made her a promise of love, he will give up everything, and stay by her side for the rest of their lives.

Once Promised Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Once Promised "Once Promised" had been on my radar for a while, especially after hearing so much about its sequel. I finally took the plunge, eager to delve into this ancient Chinese fantasy world. While it didn't completely blow me away, it certainly left a lasting impression. ### First Impressions The initial chapters drew me in with their rich world-building and intriguing characters. The setup, with two individuals from opposing tribes caught in the crossfire of war, immediately promised a compelling and heart-wrenching romance. I was ready for an emotional rollercoaster. ### What Works Well Tong Hua's writing style is definitely a highlight. The author has a knack for portraying complex emotions through seemingly simple prose. There were moments where I felt the weight of Ah Heng's internal conflict, torn between love and loyalty. The characters are realistically flawed, driven by their own motivations and desires. This made the story feel more authentic and less like a simple good-versus-evil narrative. The love interest, Chi You, is particularly well-developed. He is passionate and willing to sacrifice himself. The transformation of Ah Heng from a naive girl to a strong, independent woman is also well-executed. ### Areas of Concern The pacing felt uneven at times. While some scenes were beautifully detailed and emotionally resonant, others seemed rushed. I was also slightly disappointed that the translation is currently incomplete. This made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning One particularly poignant scene involves Ah Heng and Chi You exchanging letters while she is grounded. The subtle nuances in Chi You's words, like the seemingly casual "I thought of you again," reveal the depth of his affection and resonate deeply with Ah Heng. ### Final Verdict Overall, "Once Promised" is a worthwhile read for fans of xianxia romance and those who appreciate character-driven stories. While the incomplete translation is a drawback, the strength of the writing and the complexity of the characters make it a rewarding experience. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. I'm definitely curious to see how the translation progresses and would recommend it to anyone looking for a bittersweet and emotionally engaging novel.
