Description

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” -Matthew 7:14 Guomen, 過門/过门, meaning marriage in Chinese. If explained literally, it means going past the gates/door-a reference to the Bible(see above). “Through the Strait Gates”: to me, it’s the best way to explain it. The gate’s narrow, the road small for them. Their past and future interwoven into a tangled, messed up web. Thirteen years of sour and bittersweet memories. And seven years in between that washed out everything they had like water, leaving only stark, plain, throbbing dullness.

Through The Strait Gates Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

## My Thoughts on Through The Strait Gates "Through The Strait Gates" has been sitting on my to-read list for ages, and after finally diving in, I can see why it's garnered such a dedicated following. It's a coming-of-age story that focuses on the relationship between Dou Xun and Xu Xilin, and their journey through life, love, and self-discovery. ### First Impressions The initial hook for me was the promise of a realistic slice-of-life story, something that avoids the overused tropes often found in BL novels. I was immediately drawn to the characters, especially Xu Xilin, who felt incredibly relatable. He's not perfect, but that's what makes him so compelling. ### What Works Well Many readers praised Priest's ability to create a believable world filled with flawed, yet lovable, characters. The novel masterfully explores themes of internalized h*mophobia, societal pressures, and the complexities of relationships. I especially appreciated how the story doesn't shy away from the struggles and arguments that naturally arise in any relationship, even after the characters get together. The female characters are also well-developed and play significant roles in the narrative, which is a refreshing change from some stories where they are merely plot devices. It truly captures the feeling of growing up and the bittersweet nature of life's unexpected turns. The writing style is beautiful and has a nostalgic feel. ### Areas of Concern It's impossible to ignore the controversy surrounding a particular line in the novel that some readers found to be racist and offensive towards Filipinos. While some readers were not bothered by it, others felt deeply hurt and disappointed. It's a complex issue, and ultimately, each reader must decide for themselves whether they can overlook this aspect of the story. ### ⚠️ Spoiler Warning Some readers found the ending to be emotionally devastating, particularly the events surrounding Xu Jin. The story doesn't shy away from portraying the sudden and unexpected loss of loved ones, which can be a difficult experience for some readers. ### Final Verdict Despite the controversy and potential for emotional distress, I believe "Through The Strait Gates" is a worthwhile read. It's a beautifully written and thought-provoking story that explores the complexities of love, loss, and self-discovery. If you're looking for a realistic and emotionally resonant slice-of-life novel, I highly recommend giving it a try. However, be prepared for a potentially heavy and depressing experience.
